Watson Puts Irish Result Into Perspective
Speaking after Sunday’s game against London Irish, Falcons try scorer Marcus Watson was keen to put a defeat to the team’s closest league rivals into perspective.
“The game was pretty close at the end and I think we could have won it were it not for a few little mistakes here and there.”
Trailing 6-0 at the break, two tries in quick succession left the visitors 20 points down shortly after the re-start. But the Falcons’ fought back valiantly.
Winger Watson explains: “The first five minutes of the second half was a bit of a momentum swing; we let them get ahead and it was a catch up from there.
“I thought we did well to get ourselves back into the game though and there are plenty of positives to take from that.”
A try from Watson himself, his first in the domestic competition despite his current status as leading European Rugby Challenge Cup try scorer, helped the Falcons claw back 15 points, a final minute penalty almost tipping the final scoreline in their favour.
“In those last five minutes we had a chance to win it and could have done had it not been for a few small mistakes.”
Despite the result consigning the Falcons back to the foot of the table, Watson says there is still a long way to go this season, and much to come from his team.
“We’re disappointed with the result but it’s still early in the season and there’s plenty left to pick ourselves up for.
“The whole squad has the confidence we can stay up. There’s still plenty left of the season and we should be improving each time, which I think we are and I’m sure it’ll come good at the end of the season.”
Watson’s try against London Irish has been shortlisted for Citizen’s Premiership Rugby try of the week. To vote for him and view the other shortlisted tries click [here][1].
The Falcons now take a break from Aviva Premiership action to head back into the European Rugby Challenge Cup, where they will face Enisei-STM away this Saturday.
