A League Try of the Season Selected
After a social media competition which saw over 400 people view the Falcons’ Aviva A League highlight reel, the club can reveal the winner of our Aviva A League Try of the season.
In a close run contest that saw Joe Craggs’ score against Sale Sharks voted runner up, try number five from Tom Penny against Gloucester was voted the winning score.
After a superb piece of team play, Penny found himself on the end of a pass from Jamie Helleur and pulled away to make a run for the line, touching down for the Falcons’ fifth of seven tries in their 53-29 defeat of Gloucester United.
James Ponton, A Team Head Coach said: “This try pretty much sums up how we see A Team rugby being played and is a great choice.
“There are lots of people from varying positions getting their hands on the ball, the players playing what is in front of them and making smart decisions around attacking and especially offloading.
“It was great to see Jamie Helleur putting pace into the attack, then Tom Penny finishing off a great try.
“Tom has had good season so far with a couple of solid appearances in Europe. He’s playing weekly rugby along at Blaydon and has now forced his way in as the regular starter for them at 13.
“Tom is in his second year at the Academy and hopefully by the end of next season he will be pretty close to pushing into Dean’s 1st XV squad. He knows that there is still a lot of hard work ahead to achieve this, but it is something that Tom relishes.”
Speaking of the vote, Penny said: “It’s great to hear that fans have chosen my try as the A League try of the season, although I definitely can’t take all the credit. It was a great team effort and I was really lucky to be on the end of it. We really enjoyed the A Team competition this season and I think that showed in our performances.”
