Composure key for Willis
Fly Half Craig Willis believes both he and his Newcastle Falcons team mates can work on their composure ahead of the second round of the Kings of the North cup against Leicester Tigers, following Sundays 22-36 loss to Sale Sharks.
A youthful Falcons side stood up to a Sale squad boasting a wealth of domestic and international experience and Willis says longer displays of cool heads would have helped the home side.
Speaking to Falcons TV, Willis said: “Once we got into the game and played how we wanted to play then we looked quite dangerous in phases of attack. There is a lot of stuff we need to work on, if we had kept our composure and played how we did in phases throughout the game, we’d have been a lot more dangerous.”
That said, a key feature of the Falcons three tries scored on the day was the patience of their phase play in the build up, with the 20 year old stating that this is the product of some focused pre season work.
“We’ve been working a lot on our conditioning and we feel that we can keep the ball in play for quite lengthy periods and it will be about keeping that going for more of the game.”
Having featured in both of the club’s fifteen a side matches so far this year, the Billingham born player is hopeful of further involvement when the cup continues away to Leicester Tigers on September 19th and to keep developing in the fly half position.
“If I get a chance in the Leicester game, I’ll be trying to learn my lessons from the last two weeks, things like my game management and try to build on that performance.”
