The prolific fly-half, known as ‘Banty’ throughout the game, was a firm fixture for Gosforth for well over a decade, playing for the club during their 1981 John Player Cup final at Twickenham and helping them gain promotion into the top flight in 1993.

Representing England ‘A’ and England Under-23s during a playing career which saw him become the club’s record points scorer, Johnson was also a regular representative for Northumberland’s county side.

Famed for his accurate goal-kicking and mastery of the territorial game, upon leaving Gosforth Banty went on to enjoy success at clubs around the North East including Blaydon, with whom he won the Durham Senior Cup.

Newcastle Falcons wish to pass on their sincere condolences to David’s friends and family at this difficult time, and will publish details of his funeral once they are known.
