In turgid conditions at Kingston Park the Falcons went down 21-0 to their West Country counterparts, and Richards admits his troops should have played the conditions better in the first period.
“There were a lot of positives to take from the game, but it was a shame we didn’t capitalise on the first-half,” said Richards whose outfit were attacking directly into a howling gale after the break.
He added: “Bath were always going to get points in the second-half when we were playing into the wind. We didn’t have quite the unity of turnovers as we would have hoped and we didn’t capitalise on having the elements with us and playing in the right areas as we should have done.”
Despite the elements Newcastle had their chances in the final third of the pitch with Mike Blair and Andy Saull combining midway through the second-half to produce the pick of the attacks.
Richards said: “We got ourselves into the right positions at times but we managed to shoot ourselves in the foot on occasions, but it’s something we will take heart from.
“We just need to be a bit more clinical in what we do – the first-half we didn’t take our chances and they went in with points up.
Three George Ford penalties, an Anthony Perenise touchdown and a penalty try secured the spoils for Gary Gold’s men, with Newcastle now setting their sights on a date with Sale Sharks next Friday.
