FALCONS SCOOP TWO AWARDS AT GLITZY CEREMONY
Falcons academy player Callum Chick picked up a rising star award, while director of rugby Dean Richards was named Sports Personality of the Year at the glitzy ceremony which was attended by the likes of Jack Charlton, Geoff Cook and Steve Harmison.
Chick, who is currently on the AASE Scheme at Gosforth Academy, made his England Under-18s debut in a convincing 28-6 victory over Scotland Under-18s at Dalziel at the weekend. The Newcastle-born back-row follows in the footsteps of last year’s winner Zach Kibirige, with previous winners also including Falcons skipper Will Welch and Joel Hodgson.
Newcastle academy manager Mark Laycock picked up Richards’ award in his absence, with the Kingston Park boss currently away with the senior team. Richards joins Jonny Wilkinson, Rob Andrew and last year’s winner Fab Flourney in having their names engraved on the trophy.
Meanwhile, Will Witty came off the bench in England Students’ 22-16 win against Wales at Oxford to round-off a successful weekend for academy players on the international front.
