Goneva eyes Saracens scalp

The Fijian interception artist has plundered eight tries in his 10 Aviva Premiership appearances this season, making himself the second-top try-scorer in the division.

Hoping to extend that hot streak in London this weekend, Goneva said: “We know Saracens will be a big challenge.

“We know what they can do, they’re a big team and it’s not going to be easy. We’re going to work hard for it, we’re ready and we need to stay mentally strong.

“We have the game plan, we’ve got the ability within our team and if we stick to what works we have a great chance to do something. We’re confident in what we’re doing in training, we’re going to bring it on game day and the boys are all ready.”

Goneva scored against Saracens the last time the two teams met, and was among the tries during the Falcons’ last Premiership outing when they took the scalp of champions Exeter Chiefs.

A key cog in a much-improved Newcastle side, he said: “The biggest thing here is that the boys are working hard for each other, the club is doing well and everyone is just continuing to improve.

“I think we’re definitely going in the right direction, winning our group in both cups and being in the top half of the Premiership.

“We have some big games to come and I know it will be tough, but the boys are pulling together and looking to get better in every way.”

Having recently signed a contract extension to remain at Kingston Park beyond the end of this season, Goneva added: “I am really happy to have extended my stay here, it was an easy decision for me and I’m looking forward to contributing more to the team.

“I like everything up here, the club is great and then outside of rugby you can do a lot more. You’ve got the beach, the city and the countryside as well, so it’s all within very easy reach.”
