Laycock rues ‘disappointing’ Singha 7s finals
Beaten by Ospreys in the Cup quarter-final and Harlequins in the Plate semi-final, Laycock said: “It was a disappointing day. We came down here and thought we had a good chance of delivering, but unfortunately we didn’t.
“We can only look at ourselves in terms of what went wrong in both games.”
He added: “In the first match we played into Ospreys’ hands a little bit, especially in the contact area.
“We knew they were going to be competitive there and we just didn’t quite get the balance right in terms of how we attacked. We slipped up with some of our nominations in defence, we conceded some soft tries and were made to pay.
“The Harlequins game reinforced how important restarts are in sevens. We barely touched the ball in the first half, we were almost dead and buried by half-time and it was a massive uphill fight.
“Credit to Harlequins, they controlled the ball and we ended up chasing the game. That was the most frustrating thing because in the last three minutes we finally started to show we could play. By then it was too late.”
Finding some positivity having won their qualifying competition, Laycock said: “It has been useful for the boys in relation to their 15-a-side stuff, even taking into account the disappointment of not getting a result in the finals.
“They have had a good blow-out, everyone is physically in a good place and ready to compete for selection in the games we have coming up against Doncaster, Gala and Edinburgh.”
