Match-winner Connon shares the credit

The replacement fly-half held his nerve to slot a 30-metre penalty from just right of the posts with the clock into the red, saying afterwards: “It’s a bit surreal when you find yourself in those moments with a kick to win it right at the end.

“The boys had done the hard work in getting us within range, and my job was just to put the cherry on top.

“The forwards and all the other ball-carriers who got us down the field are the ones who really deserve the credit because they did an incredible job under extreme pressure.”

Asked about the match as a whole, Connon said: “There were a lot of momentum swings in the game, a little bit like our season, but you can really feel it building at the club now.

“At about 60 minutes we had a bit of a wobble but we pulled ourselves through, the bench guys were told to bring some energy and thankfully we managed to do that.

“We gave ourselves a shot, which is all we could ask, and fortunately we took it.”

Cutting the gap between themselves and second-bottom Worcester to just three points with six rounds remaining, Connon said: “Our next game is at St James’ Park against Sale Sharks on March 23, it will be a huge occasion and we really feel it’s on for us now.

“The ‘Great Escape’ was being sung in the changing room afterwards, that’s how we’re billing it and hopefully we’ll keep going along those lines.”
