John and Sue Reece, of The John and Sue Reece Trust – a charitable foundation formed for the benefit of education, children and outdoor pursuits – which funded the facility, will be joined by Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer for an official unveiling at Newcastle School for Boys, The Grove, Gosforth, on Tuesday, September 25.

In addition, United goalkeeper Steve Harper and rugby stars, Jimmy Gopperth and Ally Hogg from Newcastle Falcons will take on senior school and Year 5 boys in coaching sessions on the new pitch.

The pitch has been specially designed to provide the boys from across the School’s age range with a multi-purpose area in which they can practise a variety of sports and also use as a general playground at break and lunchtimes.

Newcastle School for Boys is the only single sex school in the North East of England providing continuity of education for more than 400 boys from age three to 18.

Headmaster David Tickner said: “This is a super facility for all of our boys. The playing surface is a high quality specification and will support our excellent sports coaching and teaching and allow us to train to even higher levels in rugby, football and other sports.

“It also provides valuable recreation space that boys need access to during the course of a school day. We are very grateful to John and Sue Reece for making this possible.”

Sue Reece said: “We are delighted to have been able to provide the boys with a safe, all-weather sports pitch which we hope will bring them great pleasure – as well as sporting success – for many years to come.”
