James started his playing career with Percy Park before making the move to Tynedale. His professional career started at West Hartlepool, followed by Leeds Tykes. His coaching career began at Sedgley Park where he was player coach, before moving back to Newcastle. James joined the Falcons as academy coach in January 2012, moving up to academy head coach and then head of academy in 2022.
