Richards Lauds ‘Outstanding Effort’

Northampton overcame a dogged and resilient Newcastle Falcons side, eventually crossing the whitewash in the 57th minute courtesy of James Wilson after the visitors had held the Saints 6-0 at the break.

And the Falcons chief, who cut a frustrated figure with the refereeing display of his namesake, was full of praise for his troops.

“I thought the players were outstanding, and I was impressed with the likes of Richard Mayhew, Mike Blair and George McGuigan when he came on,” said Richards.

“We defended very well in the first half, and overall it was a heroic effort from the lads, but the inconsistencies from the referee didn’t help our cause in the end.

“That said, I thought we were outstanding, absolutely outstanding on the day and defensively we didn’t shy away from the hard work at all.”

An inspired Mayhew led a sterling effort against a Northampton unit that harbour ambitions of lifting the Premiership title come what May. Newcastle were very much in the contest at the interval, but Saints’ quality showed in the second half as Wilson and Luther Burrell touched down for the hosts.

The Falcons now gear up for next Sunday’s clash with Harlequins at Kingston Park with tickets still available by calling 0871 226 6060 or [click here][1] to purchase online (kick-off 2.30pm).
