Saull encouraged by Bath display
After narrowly missing out on a bonus point in Saturday’s game against Bath, Newcastle Falcons’ Andy Saull remained upbeat, commenting that there were many positives to take from his club’s return to Aviva Premiership action.
Currently standing in as team captain for fellow back row Will Welch, Saull led the Falcons around the pitch in a spirited and enthusiastic manner on Saturday and believed that the team have much to be proud of.
“I was really impressed with the guys. We were all disappointed with the loss the week before against Cardiff and we were asked to bring more physicality and a bit more doggedness to the site. We worked on things in both defence and attack and it all came to fruition on Saturday.”
Particularly impressive was the Falcons’ first half performance, which saw the team leading 3-7 until the final minute before the break.
“I think we started the game incredibly well,” Saull commented. “We almost had out foot on the throat of Bath for some time and spent long periods in their 22, and came away from the first half with a try.”
Despite a second half that saw the Falcons remain very much in the game, a penalty in the dying minutes of the second half left them without a single point to take away from the match.
“Unfortunately our downfall was penalty areas as well as our set piece. While we delivered our own ball quite well, defensively we weren’t quite at the races so we’ll definitely work on that because we let Bath off with so many opportunities.
“That said though I can’t fault the effort the game plan or the work of the guys on Saturday, and I have no doubt that if we can just iron our those things, which should be quite easy to fix, then this weekend will be a very competitive game.”
