Socino targets further improvements

Socino scored two of his side’s six tries in an Aviva Premiership thriller, saying afterwards: “The first thing was to get the five points, which is huge for us.

“Outside of that it was a bit disappointing because we allowed them to get back into the game. They fought well, but we allowed them to do that. We were a bit passive, we should have stayed on top and closed out the game earlier, but we still managed to at least get the win.

“You can’t ask for much more than five points, but we’re disappointed in a way because we could have done a lot of things better. We want to keep going up the table so we need to set high standards, and we need to be hard on ourselves.”

Elaborating on his theme, he added: “We were effective when we were direct and played it simple – basically when we stuck to the game plan. When we went away from that we struggled.

“A lot of our improved form is down to the hard work we did in pre-season. You could tell by our pre-season results what we had turned a corner, we got off to a good start in the league and it shows we are doing the right things. Still, we have room for improvement, and that’s where the focus is.”

On his own scoring contribution after opening up with an opportunist effort round the fringes of a ruck, the former Rotherham man said: “I just saw the opportunity and took it, and it’s always good to score a try. We have a lot of attacking firepower now, and when we are on point we have the talent to hurt teams. When we do that we look really sharp, the key is just doing it for longer.

“We just train hard and focus on winning the next game, but it’s huge for us to be showing an improvement in results. We have ended a few records which people have talked about, but for us the thing is just to keep going.”
