Statistical preview ahead of Saturday v Saints

* Newcastle Falcons have won seven of their last eight encounters with Northampton Saints (one defeat) in the Premiership, excluding cancelled fixtures, after losing their previous 11 clashes.

* Northampton Saints have won nine away games against Newcastle Falcons – only against three other teams they have won 10 or more matches on the road in the Premiership; however, they have won just one of their last five games at Falcons’ home ground (lost four).

* Newcastle Falcons are undefeated in their last three matches at home in the Premiership (won two, drawn one) excluding cancelled fixtures, but haven’t had a longer unbeaten sequence at home since December 2017 – April 2018 (won five).

* Northampton Saints have won just two of their last seven away games in the Premiership (lost five); however, they recorded seven wins on the road in 2021, the first time they’d won as many away games in a calendar year since 2014 (also won seven).

* Northampton Saints have scored 9.1 points per game in the opening 20 minutes of matches, the most of any team in the Premiership this season, while Newcastle Falcons have averaged the fewest points in the opening quarter of their league games (3.2).

* Newcastle Falcons failed to score a try in their most recent Premiership game but haven’t gone consecutive league matches without a try since March – April 2014 (two games); the Falcons have scored just eight second-half tries this season, the fewest of any team in the Premiership.

* Northampton Saints have scored 15.8% of their tries from scrums (6/38), the highest such ratio of any team in the Premiership in 2021/22; no team has scored more tries following a scrum than Saints in the league this season (six, level with Harlequins).

* Newcastle Falcons’ Jamie Blamire has averaged 15.8 carries per 80 minutes in the Premiership in 2021/22, the highest average of any player to make 5+ appearances this term.

* Alex Mitchell (Northampton Saints) has made eight try assists in the Premiership in 2021/22, only Harlequins’ Danny Care has tallied more than him; however, Mitchell hasn’t assisted a try in his last two appearances for Saints in the league.

* Northampton Saints’ Lewis Ludlam has made nine breakdown steals this season, more than any other player in the Premiership in 2021/22; only Harlequins’ Andre Esterhuizen has won more turnovers (11) than him overall in the league this season (9).
