Sunday’s match a must win fixture for Walder
Falcons attack coach Dave Walder sees Sunday’s fixture against London Welsh as a must win fixture for his side, but not for the reasons many pundits would have cited in pre season.
Fifteen points ahead of the Exiles heading into Sunday’s game, Walder and his coaching colleagues are insisting on looking up rather than down as the second half of the season gets underway
“It’s a must win game on Sunday, performances have improved but results haven’t and we’re very keen that we get back into that winning habit as soon as possible. We will be preparing to try and make sure that happens on Sunday.”
After an impressive showing last weekend at Northampton Saints, where the Falcons secured their first four try bonus point of the season and took their tally to seven in two games, Walder is keen that the players continue to show their improved precision.
“We’ve been more clinical in recent weeks and have been finishing more of the chances we have created by sticking to our processes. For Sunday, we have been working on a game plan that we hope is going to give us a good chance to take the game to them.”
Having ran out 3 -23 winners at the Kassam stadium in October, Welsh will pose a different challenge on Sunday after making new additions to their squad and having ran Harlequins close in their most recent Premiership game.
And while the wider rugby world may be looking at Sunday’s fixture as a last chance for Welsh, Walder’s thoughts however are firmly on the men in black and silver.
“Welsh have made a few signings since the season has gone on and they are a completely different side to the one we played down at the Kassam at the start of the season but for me, Sunday is more about keeping in touch with the guys higher up the table and giving ourselves the chance to finish the season as high up in the table as possible.”
“If us winning does anything to London Welsh, being brutally honest, that’s not my concern. Gloucester are nine points ahead of us, so we can’t afford to lose any more ground to them and that is what we’re focusing on for this game.”
