Tackling STEM Inequality: Newcastle Rugby Foundation and Sage celebrate third year of groundbreaking partnership
Newcastle Rugby Foundation are thrilled to announce the continuation of their successful partnership with Sage for the third consecutive year. The Tackling Insights programme, designed to bridge the STEM education gap in the North East, has expanded its reach and impact, now supporting 2,500 students across the region.
The Tackling Insights programme addresses a critical need in our region. Currently, only 47% of disadvantaged pupils in Sunderland and 52% in South Tyneside reach expected key stage two standards in STEM subjects, compared to over 70% in other areas. By making STEM learning more interactive and relatable, we aim to close this gap and inspire the next generation of innovators.
The innovative eight-week initiative combines the excitement of rugby with cutting-edge technology to make STEM subjects more engaging and accessible. Using AI-powered smart ball technology from Sportable, pupils participate in rugby-based challenges while learning about data analysis, coding, and other STEM concepts.
On Wednesday February 19 the Tackling Insights programme showcased its transformative power at Kingston Park. The day was a resounding success, with 28 children from Mountfield School, departing with beaming smiles, their faces reflecting the joy and excitement they experienced. For these young learners, STEM subjects were reimagined, making complex concepts engaging and accessible. But what truly stole the show was the presence of rugby legend, Maggie Alphonsi MBE, whose infectious enthusiasm inspired a newfound passion for rugby among the children. As they listened to her stories and insights, they began to see themselves as part of a larger narrative—one where determination and teamwork could lead to incredible achievements.
The excitement continued following the event when programme participants took centre stage as the guard of honour and mascots for the England v Scotland U20s Six Nations game, showcasing the programme’s impact beyond the classroom.
Looking Ahead
As the partnership enters its third year, the programme will culminate in a tag rugby festival at Kingston Park in May, building excitement for the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2025, which kicks off in Sunderland.
Melanie Magee, CEO of the Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm: “Our mission is to change lives for good across the North East, and our partnership with Sage helps us expand our impact. This initiative gives children in deprived areas a unique opportunity to explore STEM”.
Helen Devanny, vice president of the Sage Foundation, added: “Sage is committed to making a difference where it matters most. Tackling Insights helps young people in Sunderland and South Tyneside see how STEM skills can shape their future, breaking down barriers to education and opportunity while inspiring them to aim beyond where they believe they can”.
We are immensely proud of the progress made and look forward to continuing this impactful journey, inspiring more young minds to explore the exciting world of STEM through the power of rugby.
