Team news: 100 up for Radwan on Sunday

Adam Radwan makes his 100th appearance for Newcastle Falcons on Sunday when they host Northampton Saints in Gallagher Premiership action.

The 25-year-old has flown in for 52 tries in his 99 outings for the Kingston Park club, and forms part of a side showing five changes from the one which took a bonus point last week against Gloucester.

Iwan Stephens is included on the opposite wing for the 3pm kick-off, with the 21-year-old touching down four times in three games during this season’s Premiership Rugby Cup.

Elliott Obatoyinbo is rotated in at full-back having come on from the bench during the Falcons’ first two league games, while Sam Stuart comes in at scrum-half.

Welshman Sam Cross joins the back row of a pack which sees one further change – Mark Tampin slotting in at tight-head prop.

On the bench there could be a Falcons Premiership debut for Irish hooker Bryan Byrne, a summer arrival from Bristol, while lock John Hawkins – a former Bears team-mate of Byrne – is also in line for his Newcastle bow after arriving from Jersey Reds.

Head coach Alex Codling said: “I think it will be a great game of rugby for the supporters.

“Both teams’ mind-sets are very similar – we want to play at speed and move the ball to the space, and both squads are stacked with quality.”

Asked which areas have been receiving the most attention this week, he added: “Precision and discipline have been our big focuses because they’ve cost us in our previous two games.

“Taking our chances when we create them is absolutely key because we have been making a lot of scoring opportunities and not converting them.

“Discipline is another obvious one because penalties and yellow cards can have a big say in games where the margins are so fine, and we’ve had a Premiership referee in with us during training this week to try and help us understand how we can work with the officials and stay on the right side.”

Radwan, speaking about his impending appearance milestone, said: “I think of Newcastle Falcons as my home-town team and I feel massively proud to reach 100 games.

“It means a huge amount to me, and also to my family. They come to every single home match and a lot of the away ones, too. My family are a massive part of everything, and a big reason in terms of where I’ve got to where I am being a professional rugby player.

“Then I when I think about some of the other players who have got to 100 games for the club, it’s honestly a huge honour for me just to be spoken about in the same sentence as those guys.”
