Top Ten Catterick Backs Falcons to Take Flight
A busy few weeks of Aviva Premiership rugby have seen Tom Catterick pick up much praise from across the rugby world for his performances in the Falcons’ number 10 jersey.
But after a match that saw his team pick up a four try bonus point by half time, Catterick was keen to focus more on the team performance and on the Falcons’ ambitions for the rest of the season.
“Of course it’s great to get that win on the board. Over the last few weeks it’s been building up; we’ve played some quality teams and put in some big performances but haven’t got the win, so I think that was a big thing going into last week.
“It’s all good and well putting in big performances but it’s all about points on the board and victories. The result against Welsh definitely made a big difference though, it was important for us to go out there and put that marker down that said we’re not looking down at relegation, we’re looking up, and we really want to keep moving up as far as we can in the league.”
With the Falcons currently sitting at tenth in the Aviva Premiership table and about to head into a crucial European Rugby Challenge Cup match against Newport Gwent Dragons this Saturday, there is much talk about the club’s ambitions for the current term.
“We haven’t put a number on it in terms of where we’re looking to get to but we expect ourselves to be competing every week and looking to win, and we’ll see our full potential when we start to get those wins and can edge those tighter matches.”
After scoring 13 of the Falcons’ 38 points against London Welsh, Catterick was also in positive spirits about his own contribution.
“It’s always nice to have a run of games and I’ve really enjoyed the last few weeks. I haven’t played at 10 for about five years since school but I’m enjoying it and just trying to learn as much as I can and learn on the go.
“Dave Walder is a massive help so I’m trying to learn as much as I can from him and from the other guys who’ve played 10 before and are really helping me out. It’s a learning curve for me so I just have to keep my head down and keep working because there are definitely still things to work on.”
The Falcons’ next home match will see them take on Newport Gwent Dragons this Saturday in a crucial match that could decide which team progresses to the knockout stages of the European Rugby Challenge Cup.
