Vickers up for Irish tussle
The Kingston Park clash sees both clubs aiming to help secure top-flight status for next season, the prop-forward saying: “Irrespective of London Irish’s loss against Sale on Saturday we always knew this next game was going to be massive.
“It is at Kingston Park, which is great. Our fans week in and week out turn up and are fantastic for us, it will be the same on the 17th and we have two weeks to prepare well. It is about doing the right things to ensure we are 100% ready so we can deliver a performance that us and our fans will be proud of. The result can take care of itself if we do that.”
Part of the Falcons side beaten 46-25 at Harlequins on Saturday, Vickers said: “It was hugely disappointing.
“If you look at the tries we conceded in the first half, one was an interception, one was a maul which we had been prepped for and knew was coming and the third was from a line-out which we had turned over in the air. We caused ourselves some problems, we did produce some good stuff but that work was undone by lapses in concentration or whatever it was.
“It is massively frustrating. You have to take care of those little things, but those mistakes are just biting us at the moment.”
Having seen Tongan flanker Nili Latu poach another two tries to threaten his position at the head of the scorers’ chart for the season, Vickers joked: “I mentioned that to Nili after the game. I said ‘just be careful mate because you’re getting a little too close for comfort on the try-scoring front’ and he is in danger of preventing me being the top try-scorer for the first time in my life!
“All joking aside, he is a class player and it’s always nice to see forwards scoring tries. He has been outstanding all season, along with a number of others. He wears his heart on his sleeve, he goes full steam ahead into everything he does and defensively he puts in the big shots.
“His work-rate is incredible, and he complements the players around him. Our captain Will Welch has been brilliant, playing more minutes than any other player, and has led us tremendously. He is a captain that guys want to play for, and with all of the other lads in that area of the team we have a great balance.”
