Newcastle Falcons’ academy coach Aidan McNulty says this weekend’s Beachcomber World Club 10s in Mauritius has an important part to play in the club’s pre-season preparations this summer, as his charges compete in the tournament for the first time.

Taking place over three days, the competition will see the Falcons join seven other sides for three days of non-stop action on the Indian Ocean paradise with McNulty keen to point out that the event is going to prove a real test for the players involved.

Speaking to Falcons TV, McNulty said: “They are going to have to work incredibly hard so there is some fitness stuff and they are going to come back really fit.

“Also because it is closer to the 7s format, it puts their skills under pressure so their catch-pass, breakdown skills and aerial stuff has got to be on the money in order to compete in this game.”

Taking place ahead of the main chunk of the club’s pre-season programme, McNulty says the World Club 10s also provides those players selected with the chance to get themselves ahead of the curve when it comes to getting ready for season 2018/19.

He added, “It’s a great opportunity for the guys to nail those skills so that when they come back to their 15s stuff in pre-season, they are ahead of the rest of the guys in the squad.”
