Welch set for Festive Fixture
With the whole Welch clan gathering on mass, Will intends to unwind with the family, whilst preparing for the match which will see the Falcons biggest crowd since regaining the place in the Premiership in attendance.
“Christmas is going to be a big family do in the afternoon, there will be 15 of us around my Dad’s house so it should be fun. Everyone will be getting going on the games and the drinking, but I’ll sneak away at that point and watch some Christmas films instead.”
“Even though it’s Christmas, it’s an ordinary week in terms of preparing for and playing the game so you still have to watch what you do in terms of eating and drinking. There’s a lot more going on though around the house so you still get to take your mind of things a bit.”
Looking towards the weekend, fourth placed Sarries will travel North looking to make up ground on the Aviva Premiership’s top two though Welch says he and his teammates are prepared for what comes their way.
“Sarries are big on controlling the game and doing the basics really well. Both teams like to chuck the ball around but with Sarries, I don’t think it will be the free flowing style of play you might expect from say a Quins.
They are pretty set in their structures; they won’t play at all in certain areas, but they have a lot of firepower in that team and they are probably the most ruthless team in the premiership in exploiting their chances so I think it will be a good contest.
With over 7,100 tickets already sold, the game could see its biggest attendance since May 2008 with Welch encouraging anyone yet to buy a ticket to come down and support the team on Saturday.
“The squad are really looking forward to the game, everyone likes playing in front of a big crowd and with the numbers being quoted, it will look full and it makes a huge difference. It gives everyone those extra percentages that you need to call upon to beat a side like Sarries.”
“In terms of performance and the way we are playing we really are leagues apart from last year and I think it will be an entertaining encounter this weekend.”
