Wells praises ‘professional’ Falcons

A rampant Falcons side had the four-try bonus point wrapped up by half-time against a young Blues outfit and added a further 33 points after the interval, Wells stating: “Let’s be respectful of what team Cardiff Blues sent up here because we’ve gone out against opposition which most people would have expected us to beat, but it’s testament to the lads that we did a good professional job.

“We put some points on the board in the first half but we’ve been there before and things have gone to rat poo, whereas today we kept our shape and grew stronger as the game went on.

“Yes we could have been more clinical at times, but the danger was that we could have become more sloppy as the game opened up. We maintained our shape, kept our togetherness and in the end it was a pretty decent performance.”

Wells added: “The opportunities Cardiff had to get themselves on the front foot were more down to our own inaccuracy and game management at times, but we dealt with it OK through a couple of good steals by Ryan Burrows to help shake away their momentum.

“Ultimately as we started to hold on to the ball better and make better use of it we got better field position, and the tries started to come. The main frustration was about managing the first 20 minutes better, because with all respect to Cardiff Blues a better team would have probably made us suffer a lot more than we did today.”

Sitting top of their Anglo-Welsh Cup group midway through the pool phase ahead of next weekend’s Aviva Premiership return at Wasps, the defence coach said: “When we play our game with accuracy and precision we’re very good, and the challenge for us a side is imposing our style on the opposition more than they can impose theirs onto us.

“There are a variety of ways we can do that, and I have to say when we did it today we scored some very good tries.

“We didn’t see enough of that in the first 25 minutes, but we showed that when we are accurate and we stick to our script we’ve got very good players who can cause danger to the opposition.”
