Will Welch: Captain’s Log

Will Welch is relishing the return of Aviva Premiership Rugby following a four-week Anglo-Welsh and European Challenge Cup break, as he and his teammates look to press their claim for a top six finish starting with a visit to Sale.

Speaking with Falcons TV to reflect on the season so far, as the 2016/17 Aviva Premiership Rugby run in closes in, the captain’s view is that things have gone well but more is required to seal a top-six finish.

“We got off to a good start and we’ve got some good momentum before the last block of cup games. We’re going well in the Premiership at the minute and its now just about making sure that we kick on over this next block of four games. It’s pretty tight around the middle of the table and if we’re to have our goal of finish top six, then we need to pick up some big wins.”

With six on the board already this season and further impressive performances delivered against the likes of Saracens and Wasps, there are plenty of highlights to look back on ahead of round 14, with Welch maintaining they are all playing a part in putting the feel-good feeling into the club.

He added: “I think just the big wins we have had in general, especially Premiership. Our away form had been pretty poor prior to this season and we got a big win away at Gloucester and a massive win away at Northampton Saints, which has been huge for confidence and get that momentum and little bit of belief and then some good performances including a big home win against Bath and that has kept us in the mix to be pushing towards a top six spot.”
