Wilson calls for increased physicality

Mark Wilson insisted inexperience wasn’t an issue against Sale in the opening round of the Kings of the North Cup at Kingston Park, instead saying he and his team mates need to focus on unlocking their potential.

The build up to the match, which saw the Falcons minus approaching 20 players through international call ups and injuries, saw a number of academy prospects and trailists named in the side and Wilson refuted the notion that this played a part in the defeat.

Speaking post match to Falcons TV, Wilson said: “There is a lot of stuff we need to look through during the week and make sure that boys know their roles. As professional players, it wasn’t the line up that let us down, what did was our physicality and our energy and I think that is a non negotiable as professionals.”

Refusing to be overly despondent, the 26 year old stated there was still plenty to take from the match and on which to carry on the preparations for the 2015/16 Aviva Premiership season, which gets under way on October 16th at Kingston Park against Gloucester.

“We’re very disappointed with the result but there were some really good performances. Young Dan Taylor had a real good game, backing up his game for Tynedale at the weekend, Craig Willis and Brett Connon did really well and it was good to see the trialists have a good crack at it.”

“There is still a long way to the Premiership stuff but it’s good to be playing, it’s exciting and the nerves a quite high at this stage of the season because everyone is still battling for those positions.”

“We showed glimpses against Sale of how the team can play and how devastating we can be, we just have to learn the lessons and sort the little things that are fixable and bring the sort of physicality we did against Georgia.”
