Wilson meets the media
The prop-forward, capped 44 times by England, declared himself fit and available for selection for the Aviva Premiership encounter less than a week after rejoining Newcastle Falcons from Bath.
Interviewed by BBC Look North, Made in Tyne & Wear, BBC Newcastle, The Rugby Paper and The Journal during a busy midweek media session, the South Shields native said: “It’s seven years now that I’ve been away, and it’s good to be back. I didn’t think it would take this long but I have taken the opportunity with both hands.
“I played the last game of the season for Bath but picked up a slight calf injury, so I haven’t played a game of rugby for a few months now. I am up for selection this weekend, though, and if I get picked I should be good to go.”
The Falcons go into Sunday’s game on the back of an 18-13 away win at Gloucester last weekend, Wilson stating: “I watched the Gloucester game and, looking at it, we took our chances and were quite disciplined.
“We didn’t give away many penalties, tactically we played a good game and when you look at matches in the Aviva Premiership they come down to tight margins. You have to put in an 80-minute performance and hopefully it goes your way, but ultimately it takes a little bit of luck and we also had that.”
Keen to kick on in his second spell in the North East, he added: “It has been a good time down at Bath. I have got 44 caps for England, been involved with some good rugby at club level and enjoyed my time there. But it is good to come home and be with the family, to be at Kingston Park again and playing in front of a load of Geordies in that South Stand.
“The time was right for me and my family, and hopefully for Newcastle Falcons. I want to play some good rugby here and I am loving being back in the area.”
