Young signals attacking intent v Northampton
The 3pm kick-off sees the Falcons aiming to continue the positive progress they have shown this season, the team dominating the play for long spells of their last outing on Sunday despite eventually falling 31-6 at Wasps.
Young, who toured with England Saxons in South Africa last summer, said: “We just want to go out and enjoy ourselves.
“It was disappointing last week to only come away with a few penalties and not get any tries. We back ourselves as an attacking threat with the structure our attack coach Dave Walder has in place, our attack is very good and we should be scoring more tries from it. Sunday is a great chance for us to get out there and showcase the attacking structure we have got, get some points and move on from last week.
“When we stick to shape and get our roles right we look really good. It is an exciting brand of rugby that Dave has us playing in attack and the onus is on the players to make sure we execute that shape. If we do that we can be a very good team – we just need to cut out the lapses in concentration.”
The Hartlepool-born half-back added: “We speak a lot about being brave – putting that extra pass in.
“It is probably more wanting to express yourselves rather than getting too caught up in what is going on. It is having the bravery to put in that extra pass, to back the players outside, and if we do that we can come away with points. For me, we are so close to actually getting past that point, and once we break through it we will be very destructive.”
On the challenge posed by the Saints, Young said: “Any Aviva Premiership team will test you, regardless of the competition. It is always a challenge, the games are so tough these days and the depth Northampton have got means they will always be strong.
“They like to play with a big set of forwards running around, being disruptive, and they love their big runners coming round the corner. It’s a case of fronting up to them, ensuring we win the physical battle and enforcing our game plan onto them.
“A few years ago when I was in my first spell with the club we actually got to the final of this competition, it was a great experience and there is some good rugby played.
“We like to back ourselves against anyone, especially at Kingston Park. In that sense we feel Northampton are there for the taking, but it’s the same against any team and I imagine they will be sat there saying the same thing about us. They travel pretty well, and even though they haven’t had the best start in their history we know it won’t be an easy one.”
Sunday’s game will be preceded by a two-minute silence, playing of the ‘Last Post’ and the laying of a wreath on the field, with the Poppy Appeal collecting in and around the ground. After the match at 5.15pm on the main field there will be a match between the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and 4th Regiment Artillery.
